Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Have you heard of the lymphatic system? Think back to the last time you were fighting a cold or felt run down. Do you remember feeling small, tender bumps around the sides of your neck? Those lumps were probably swollen lymph nodes; the sign of a normal and healthy immune response!

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic (lim-fat’ik) system is a complex network of tissues, vessels, and organs that play a crucial role in maintaining the body's immune system and fluid balance. It works in tandem with the circulatory system to protect the body from infections, filter waste materials, and remove excess fluid from tissues. Without a properly functioning lymphatic system, both our cardiovascular system and immune system would be significantly compromised.

The main function of the lymphatic system and why should we Take care of it

  • Fluid Balance: The lymphatic system helps maintain a healthy balance of fluids by collecting excess fluid, waste materials, and proteins from body tissues. It returns these substances to the bloodstream, preventing harmful substance buildup and tissue damage.

  • Immune Support: It filters harmful substances, captures pathogens, destroys bacteria, viruses, and other harmful particles, and contains immune cells that help defend against infections and diseases, safeguarding our overall health.

  • Nutrient Absorption: It transports fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system into the bloodstream, ensuring proper nutrient absorption.

  • Waste Removal: It eliminates metabolic waste, toxins, and foreign substances from tissues, promoting detoxification and preventing tissue damage.

  • Monitoring and Protection: The lymphatic system monitors lymph and blood for pathogens, malignant cells, and abnormal substances, acting as a surveillance system for early detection.

What Alternative Treatments to clear out A clogged lymphatic system

  1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): MLD was developed by Dr Vodder in the 1930s in Paris, it’s a specially designed and effective technique that encourages lymphatic circulation by removing obstructions and stimulating lymph flow. It can help eliminate metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria, fat, large protein molecules, and foreign substances from the tissues. MLD is particularly useful when the lymphatic system is not functioning correctly and can promote deep relaxation, reduce stress, balance the autonomic nervous system, improve the digestive system, and reduce swelling and inflammation. By assisting the body in returning to normal function and preventing disease, MLD can help reduce swelling, improve immune function, and promote overall lymphatic health.

  2. Acupuncture: Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It is believed to promote the flow of energy (Qi) and stimulate the lymphatic system. Acupuncture can help balance internal organ function, reduce pain/inflammation, relieve congestion, and improve both lymphatic and blood circulation.

  3. Supplements & Herbal Remedies: Certain herbs and herbal preparations have been traditionally used to support lymphatic drainage and detoxification. Do Regular detox programs such as Fasting and taking supplements like lymphtox, liver and kidney cleansers to aid in the detoxification process. Examples include red clover, cleavers, calendula, and echinacea. These herbs can be taken internally as teas, tinctures, or supplements, like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, or probiotics.
